hannah & yohan's knox church wedding

Written by Angela Penn on January 25th, 2015.      0 comments

Hannah & Yohan had their first date 2 years after they met (thanks to their parents!).  It was a very nervous Yohan who asked Hannah out for coffee, and the rest (as they say) is history.  Their parents had been hinting and hinting (not so subtly I think!) for them to get together but after two years of persistence it finally paid off. Actually it was Hannah who says that when her parents finally stopped hinting, they went for coffee.

Knox Church is now open again and it's beautiful inside.  They have the old pews, some still with dust from the rubble.  It smells both old and new at the same time.  It's roomy and lovely to shoot in too!

The day started at Yohan's flat where he and his two brothers David and Josh were also getting ready, along with another groomsman, Brian.  Dad Steve was there with Yohan's mum and sister Chuana.  These guys are big on family and big on love.  It's awesome.

Then I was off to Rutherford Lodge where Hannah and her bridesmaids had just arrived from Soho where they'd just finished having hair and makup done.  Absolutely stunning!

Yohan's sister Chuana, does a lovely reading and then both Yohan & Hannah's dads get up and sing - amazing!!! Very talented families.

I love the part of the ceremony, when the new bride and groom have just signed the register. The usually think they're out of the spotlight while their witnesses are signing it, but this is when some of my favourite images are made.

the irvine family

Written by Angela Penn on January 24th, 2015.      0 comments

The holiday period is a great time to have family photos taken and I'm normally busy between Christmas and New Year with family portraits. It's a fantastic opportunity to get everyone together and make some memories! Because you never know when you'll see each other next.  Alana's in laws were staying with them over Christmas so she asked me to take a few snaps while they were all together.  :)

I met Alana a few years ago when our boys went to preschool together - but we only really knew each other to say hi.  We've recently re-connected through mutual friends and she is one lovely lady! She owns the fabulous Soho hair salon on Lincoln Road and is uber-talented (and just down right cool).  I really enjoyed our shoot, especially getting this lovely couple shot of her and hubby Marcus.  :)

First up, I thought we'd get the group photo out the way so everyone could relax and mill around... making fun of each other while the individual groups got their photos taken.  It was a scorching hot day and everyone was very patient while I grouped and then regrouped... and then grouped again.  Gotta get it right, right? I don't want a hovering head with no body. Even though "certain people" were trying to hide...

sarah & chris' beautiful barrhill / terrace downs wedding

Written by Angela Penn on January 23rd, 2015.      0 comments

Last Saturday I travelled down to Barrhill Church to photograph Sarah & Chris' wedding.  This wee church is gorgeous and I could hardly wait for Sarah to arrive so I could photograph them together!  It was a beautiful, sunny day filled with lots of friends and family and love. It was beautiful.barrhill terrace downs wedding20150117 0059barrhill terrace downs wedding20150117 0002

Chris arrives, and his first duty is a selfie, of course!
barrhill terrace downs wedding20150117 0003

The guests are all tucked inside the church so Sarah and her dad make their way inside so Sarah can see her husband to be for the first time that day.

Woohoo! A big thumbs up from Chris as the newlyweds exit the church! So stoked!!!

Sarah's nana is a gorgeous wee lady!

Now this is what I couldn't wait for... I'd spotted this beautiful light floating through the church window and could not wait to place Sarah directly in it.  I'm loving taking my bridal portraits - I love the fact this part of the day is a time to just be calm, have a seat, & look gorgeous before you go out and see your family and friends.

Then off to Terrace Downs where we had a very small window to take some creative shots before we headed into the reception.

These guys were awesome! Loved hanging out with them.  On the way to Terrace Downs I had a great chat with Mark (one of Chris' groomsmen) about how to make a decent green tea.  I'm addicted to the stuff and now I know how to take it.  :)

Upstairs, Kara and the team from Terrace Downs had done a fantastic job.

I don't know what it is about this shot, but I LOVE it.  Perhaps it's because they don't know I've taken it? But it seems to be like the calm before the storm...
barrhill terrace downs wedding20150117 0047

Sarah (and Chris) had made 60-odd cranes - this was referred to in the speeches as Chris' love for "all things Japanese - except his wife". Yes, Graeme, I was listening.  ;)
barrhill terrace downs wedding20150117 0048

This is Sarah and her dad.  Images taken minutes apart - Sarah's was taken before we headed up to the reception and I noticed her dad sitting like this a lot during the speeches.  Family resemblance much?  :)

As the light was fading very rapidly, we went out for a few quick snaps before dinner.  Actually I think dinner had been served but I made them come outside for 5.  Mean huh?

3 generation family shoot

Written by Angela Penn on January 22nd, 2015.      0 comments

Before Christmas, I'd been commissioned by Catherine to replicate her mum and dad's engagement photo, as they had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.  How cool is this shot?  It was really fun trying to 'copy' it too!  (Obviously I didn't take the original image and I don't know the photographer to credit the photo).

sarah & bassam's gardens/langdale wedding, actually

Written by Angela Penn on January 12th, 2015.      0 comments

Bassam & Sarah are two souls that love fun.  Fun was the theme of their wedding (along with Love Actually and various Disney/Pixar tunes).  Naturally I had to shoot their wedding, because, after our first meeting, we could not stop talking about How to Train Your Dragon 2, and how Stoic's beard was awesome (more awesome than the first one)..... and how amazing the graphics were.  Oh yeah and speaking of amazing, their wedding day was amazing, awesome and FUN!!!

christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0001

I started off the day with Sarah, her mum Sue and her nan at Peppers, Clearwater.  My friend Lucy Harvey was on hair and Selina Nunn on makeup. These two make a great team!
christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0003

Sarah wore two dresses on her wedding day, on the left a traditional white gown but on the right - the party dress in lemon!  (Would you believe she made this dress? Such a clever girl.  She does admit she had some help but she's still very clever).

I love these shots of Sarah, just collecting her thoughts before she sees Bassam.
christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0017

Bassam was getting ready with the help of his brother, Gus and the wonderful Tegan Johnson (Tegan Johnson Photography) was shooting the boys.  Looked nice and relaxed over there!
christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0021

Yes, you have to have your tongue out when doing this.  christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0022

I LOVE this shot of Bassam - nice one, Tegan!  Looking sharp, Mr Maghzal!
christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0023-2christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0024christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0025

Then it was off to the ceremony where guests were waiting and chatting.  They chose to get married at the Cockayne Memorial Gardens (in the Botanic Gardens) and it was such an intimate little setting and the day was beautifully overcast.
christchurch botanic gardens wedding 0026

Sarah and her mum and nan had to walk a little way from the carpark - so why wear your heels when you can wear perfectly good jandals?

So while the guests were making their way to Langdale Vineyard Restaurant, the newyweds and I made the most of our beautiful surroundings.

Back at Langdales, Tegan was making some amazing ring shots! I couldn't decide which one to use, so I'm putting these all in the blog!

Sarah & Bassam MADE this cake!  And believe me, it was YUMMY!

allen & yixing's rangi ruru church wedding

Written by Angela Penn on January 8th, 2015.      0 comments

"You're everything I hope for - you're everything I need... You are so beautiful to me" so goes the song (which will be referenced later in this blog).  Allen & Yixing are one of the most beautiful couples you can ever meet.  Allan, with his huge beaming grin and Yixing with those gorgeous eyes...  It was just the most special, magical day and it was evident that this couple are so very loved, and have many wonderful friends and family.  It was my absolute pleasure and honour to capure their wedding on Saturday and it was neither too hot nor too cold... it was just perfect.
christchurch asian wedding 0001

We started off at Merivale Manor which is a beautiful venue. This was a place where both bride and groom could get ready with their families but once Yixing got her dress on, Allen was not allowed anywhere near her!  I'll just let the images tell the story...

And now for the bride to start the getting ready process.  Already looking beautiful.

christchurch asian wedding 0009

I shouldn't have been surprised at all the help they received from friends and family - these two are the most deserving couple - loved by everyone.

Over at Allen's unit, the boys started to get ready too. Hmmm which tie to wear?

Then off to Allen's parents' Hazlenut Farm where there was a small army of friends getting the marquee ready for the rest of the guests to arrive.  Oh and the wind had also picked up a bit so I was hoping for a bit of veil action... didn't think it would fly right off!
christchurch asian wedding 0061d

The couple also had a tea ceremony (and as they told me, they aren't really that traditional because in the teapot was Baileys!).  Although I didn't understand a word of what was being spoken, it was without a doubt, one of the most emotional, loving things I'd ever seen.

And now it's party time!!!
christchurch asian wedding 0071christchurch asian wedding 0072christchurch asian wedding 0073

When it was Best Man Caleb's turn to speak, he'd also prepared a little something special... This was probably one of the best hakas I'd ever witnessed. It was so full of emotion and passion... words can't describe it but it was awesome!
christchurch asian wedding 0075
christchurch asian wedding 0074

Ok so here's Allen's speech - he not only spoke beautifully and from the heart, he even played the piano and sang "You are so beautiful" to his new wife.  Not a dry eye in the house!
christchurch asian wedding 0076

When it was time for me to leave the dance floor was getting pretty packed.
christchurch asian wedding 0078

I'll leave you with one of my favourites from Allen & Yixing's wedding but I want to say a huge thank you to this wonderful couple.  They are amazing and their many loving friends and family are testament to their wonderful souls.  Lots of love and the very best of luck, you two. xxx

sarah & chris' engagement shoot in the gardens

Written by Angela Penn on January 5th, 2015.      0 comments

You'd be hard pressed to find a lovelier setting than our very own Christchurch Botanic Gardens.  It has everything you could want in a photographic backdrop and outside the museum on a beautiful afternoon, I met Sarah & Chris for the very first time and they were amazing in front of the camera!  Check them out.  :)
